Brakes put on Red Bus service from Amberley By ROBYN BRISTOW

The brakes have been put on a commuter bus service between Amberley and Christchurch due to park­and­ride stations being mooted for Rangiora and Kaiapoi. Red Bus chief executive Paul McNoe says the commercial risk of going ahead with an Amberley service is too high at present due to Environment Canterbury’s (ECan) proposal to establish the park­and­ride stations. The service by Red Bus to Amberley would have been independent of the company’s contracted services in the city and would not attract any funding. ‘‘We have contracts with ECan but also have some commercial operations such as the Darfield and Oxford bus services which Amberley would have been,’’ he says. Hawarden resident Andrew Mason is critical of the decision by Red Bus, which is owned by Christchurch City Holdings, fully owned subsidiary of the Christchurch City Council. He says due to competition with Ecan’s bus service undermining the city council’s bus service the residents of North Canterbury are forced to continue to use ‘‘NZTA’s substandard motorway adding at times an additional 90 minutes to what should be a 30 minute commute’’. ‘‘It’s truly disappointing that

the short sightedness of Environment Canterbury is simply exacerbating the years of short sightedness of the Christchurch City Council that got North Canterbury to this point,’’ says Mr Mason. He says people in North Canterbury were now being expected to drive their car from Amberley and beyond, a drive of about 30 minutes, to park their car then catch a bus into Christchurch.

Mr Mason says the government is attempting to create a city that people want to work in and Environment Canterbury and the Christchurch City Council seem to be trying their level best to make it as hard as possible for anyone to get there. ‘‘It is no wonder that we have a problem when we have government organisations

fighting each other to maintain their commercial operations. ‘‘This lack of foresight and ability to make decisions that go further than just next week will see more and more businesses relocate out of Christchurch. ‘‘No wonder the motorway is the way it is every morning,’’ says Mr Mason, who adds that they used a private school bus service each morning to get their kids into various Christchurch schools. ‘‘It works brilliantly and is cost effective ­ something that seems to be unachievable by the council owned bus companies.’’ Red Bus ran a weekday bus service from Amberley prior to the earthquakes, but it stopped when patronage dropped after the quakes, making it uneconomic. However, Red Bus, responding to requests from Amberley locals, recently tested demand for a service. ‘‘The response to the survey was a little bit lighter than we expected,’’ says Mr McNoe. He said ECan could offer the incentive of park­and­ride, which was a benefit Red Bus could not offer. In an email to those who took part in the Amberley survey Red Bus said it ‘‘has no direct influence on ECan’s intention or ability to provide alternative services like park and ride. ‘‘If residents wish to debate the effectiveness or relevance of park­and­ride they should contact ECan.’’

Rangiora,Kaiapoi to host buskers By SHELLEY TOPP Christchurch’s World Busker Festival is coming to Rangiora and Kaiapoi next year. Next year’s popular festival will run from January 14 to January 24, with a Buskers Roadshow coming to North Canterbury. Buskers from the festival

A Sefton woman is heading to Vietnam and Cambodia to teach art to carers who run rehabilitation shelters for children caught up in the sex slave industry and human rights abuse. Corina Hazlett, who is a well known New Zealand art practitioner, says she is having a mix of emotions about her trip which range from excitement to anticipation of the unknown. Corina is a well known New Zealand art practitioner involved as a regular art tutor to inmates in some of New Zealand’s male prisons where she helps with recovery and rehabilitation through art. She is travelling to Vietnam and Cambodia under the umbrella of Hagar New Zealand and will travel with local Christchurch Hagar New Zealand representative contact Sarah Scott Webb. The connection with Hagar, which works with survivors of modern­day slavery and extreme human rights abuse around the world, began through Marina Shearer of Waiau. Marina runs a charity called ‘‘Love and Liberty’’ which is involved in fundraising and education to stop slavery and human trafficking.’ ‘‘My focus is on South East Asian and particularly child sex slavery,’’ says Marina who is now fundraising to help get Corina to Vietnam and Cambodia. Kaikoura’s marine reserve successful Kaikoura’s marine reserve has proven a success in its first year of existence. The Kaikoura Marine Management Act came into being in August last year, following nine years of campaigning by Te Korowai o Te Tai o Morakura, creating a new marine reserve, whale and seal sanctuaries and new catch limits. ‘‘One year on, new marine protection at Kaikoura is well supported locally, but there is still much to be done,’’ Te Korowai chairman Larnce Wichman says. ‘‘The new fishing regulations, the whale sanctuary, three mataitai, two taiapure, and the Hikurangi Marine Reserve were all designed to help enrich and sustain marine life for present and future generations.’’ Mr Wichman says Te Korowai has been occupied over the last 12 months with the process to appoint legal ‘‘Guardians’’ for the coast and is now seeking feedback from the public. Now a year since the passing into law of the act, we would really like to ask people both locally and from outside how it has been received. We want to understand what the public know and how much they care?’’ Mr Wichman says the visible changes for the public have been the signs placed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) along SH1 and at launching ramps showing boundaries and providing information about take or no­take zones and fishing regulations. ‘‘There was a strong education drive through last summer by MPI and DOC staff to get the messages across with printed information and patrols by officers and honoraries. ‘‘Feedback to Te Korowai has been mixed. There has been a good pick­up and acceptance by locals about the changes. However, there is a general feeling that more and better education and signage would help even more. ‘‘Visitors and boaties from other areas are another dimension and more of a

We think that the best insurance is to have the Kaikoura public take pride of ownership over the new measures, adding hundreds of extra eyes to see that people are doing the right thing.’’ MPI reports it is generally happy with the level of compliance for recreational fishers since the introduction of the new regulations. It says it has been a busy time for staff and honorary fisheries officers (HFOs) since the regulations were introduced in September last year, with the majority of the fishers inspected respecting the daily limits and minimum sizes. But there is always room for improvement of compliance to the fisheries regulations. Last summer MPI staff and HFOs found more than 100 people breaking the new regulations. Three of these cases led to court proceedings. Ten people were caught fishing within the new marine reserve. To assist in the education of recreational fishers within the area, MPI

and HFOs have put up 170 new signs along the coast and distributed 30,000 educational brochures. MPI staff and HFOs regularly patrol the area with more than 300 recreational patrols along the coast and at sea within the last 10 months. Reports of any suspicious fishing activity can be reported by calling 0800 4 POACHER (0800 476224). All calls are confidential. Mike Aviss, of DOC, says DOC staff ‘‘gave special emphasis around the new Hikurangi Marine Reserve, which DOC administers. This has been scaled back over the winter, but regular checks are still made, with, pleasingly, few offences’’. Ian Croucher, Te Korowai member and charter fisher representative, says he has been heartened to see Kaikoura’s charter fishing fleet, of seven boats, working towards a code of practice for sustainable fishing, ‘‘which is a first for charter fishing anywhere in New Zealand’’.

A gala day last Sunday for families, to introduce the Rangiora High School Nursery School to North Canterbury, featured an obstacle and cross­country race for two to eight­year­olds. Held at Rangiora’s Dudley Park the event proved popular, attracting a big crowd of adults and children. It was the first time the community event had been held and focused on fun. Aside from the races for the children, and one for their parents, there was a wide selection of activities including bouncy castles, a sausage sizzle, face painting, bubble balls, crazy spuds, coffee carts, American doughnuts and a photo booth. The event was run in conjunction with the Tiddlers Multisport Trust. It received a lot of support from the community and a team of nursery school volunteers, and now looks certain to become an annual fundraiser for the nursery school. ‘‘It was generously supported by many North Canterbury businesses,’’ said head teacher, Helga McClay, of Oxford. One of New Zealand’s oldest early childhood centres, the Nursery School was established in 1938 with Sunday’s gala event helping mark 78 years of community­ based, not­for­profit, early childhood education for 3­5 year­old children. The school, on the corner of East Belt and Wales Street, Rangiora, and has a large outdoor play area with a wide range of equipment. All funds raised will be used to extend the play area, and provide new resources, including wooden climbing boxes, water and sand­play equipment, physical education equipment, outdoor tables and a new storage shed.

Xmas deadline for plan A preliminary draft red zone recovery plan is likely to be ready by Christmas. Waimakariri Mayor David Ayers says a team is being put together to start work on a discussion document in early October, with the aim of completing a preliminary draft plan ready for public engagement by the end of the year. The final draft will go to the ‘‘relevant Minister’’ in the middle of next year. Two weeks ago, Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee asked the Waimakariri District Council to prepare a draft recovery plan to identify the intended long term use of residential red zone land in the district. The preliminary draft plan will include input from the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA), Environment Canterbury and Ngai Tahu. ‘‘We are aware of the April 18 deadline for CERA, so there will need to be transitional provisions for us to complete the recovery plan process,’’ Mr Ayers says. Recovery plans have been used several

times to help speed up work considered essential to earthquake recovery in the region, including the recent renewed red zone recovery offer and the Land Use Recovery Plan (LURP). ‘‘The LURP has been very important for Waimakariri and greater Christchurch because it has enabled us to use elements of the Urban Development Strategy to help plan for the recovery from the earthquakes,’’ Mr Ayers says. Once the preliminary draft plan is finished there will be four weeks of public engagement into February next year, and will include formal hearings if required. The council has completed 38 out of 50 recovery projects, with most of the remaining work awaiting the outcome of the red zone recovery plan process. ‘‘This is a major step from our point of view. The discussion document is a major piece of work and it will help us to move forward in areas where uncertainty remains around earthquake recovery,’’ Mr Ayers says.

Summer season in Kaikoura is near By GLENN ORMSBY Spring is here and we are looking forward to another good summer in the nature and wildlife capital of New Zealand. We are noticing an increase in campervans and tourists arriving after a quiet winter and our accommodation providers and local tourist operators are reporting that their forward bookings for Christmas, January and February are looking good. With the summer season approaching there are many great experiences for you to enjoy in Kaikoura. We are working with a major tourism operator to develop a new tourist attraction, so watch this space. The recent announcement that China Southern Airlines will be flying into Christchurch three days a week from December and going all year round is fantastic for the whole Christchurch and Canterbury region. Places like Hanmer Springs and ourselves should notice a real increase in tourist numbers. We need to be encouraging our district as a winter destination. It gets hot in China in the summer, whereas they can come here and see snow on the mountains and the beautiful scenery ­ it’s a fantastic alternative.

The Canterbury Mayoral Forum’s recent Canterbury Regional Economic Development Strategy announcement will provide positive outcomes for the whole region and particularly in the smaller areas like Kaikoura. Christchurch is the hub and the spokes are the regions, so we can expect some real benefits as we continue to work together. We are continuing to explore options to address the issue of rocks in the South Bay and we are working with Environment Canterbury and the harbour master, so we can increase the number of cruise ships arriving here and attract bigger cruise ships. If we can attract more and bigger cruise ships there will be benefits for our neighbours as well. Kaikoura has a busy couple of months coming up, beginning with the Kaikoura Hop this weekend (September 17­20), followed by our biggest event of the year Seafest on Saturday, October 3, and then the Kaikoura Trotting Cup meeting on Marlborough Anniversary Day, Monday, November 2. Dear Editor Most readers will know there are nine months in a human pregnancy. Less will know that annually, World foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Day falls on the ninth day of the ninth month. While only some may know that drinking alcohol during pregnancy can be extremely harmful to the developing baby. Evidence that alcohol can cause miscarriages, premature births and a life time of disabilities for the person exposed to it prenatally is conclusive. The World Health Organisation states ‘‘there’s no safe time­no safe amount.’’ Last week on World FASD Day, a Blue Butterfly Prevent FASD Campaign was launched in North Canterbury aimed at raising awareness that together, both male and female can be responsible for preventing this condition. Iced cakes with a Blue Butterfly on top were delivered to the Hurunui high schools, medical centres and the Mayor’s office. Blue Butterfly lapel badges were distributed, to be worn as a reminder not to drink alcohol during pregnancy and to support all who could become pregnant, to abstain. The Blue Butterfly comes from Brazilian folklore which tells when many butterflies flap their wings a storm is created ­ when many beautiful fragile people work together, change will occur. Crystal’s royal connection By ROBYN BRISTOW Scottish ancestry was revisited when North Canterbury woman, Helen Grimmer travelled across the world to Scotland to attend a family reunion of her maternal grandmother’s family. It was by far the longest trip of anyone who attended the reunion where 100 descendants gathered, says Helen who lives on the outskirts of Amberley and attended with her cousin who was born in Christchurch but now lives in Ireland. The highlight of the trip was not just meeting her descendants but a celebration of a connection to the Royal family ­ a 50lb crystal ­ a huge black stone found by James Grant, Helen’s great, great grandfather. ‘‘My cousin and I correspond about family research and due to her efforts the cairngorm crystal was located in the Queen’s collection in Balmoral. ‘‘A relation in Scotland was keen to organise a reunion and liaised with Balmoral so we could see the crystal.’’ The crystal was given to Queen Victoria who paid Mr Grant one pound for every pound of weight ­ 50 pound which today would be worth 3000 pounds. A small part of the Cairngorm stone was then used to create an intricate silver brooch for Prince Albert which was recently featured on the Antiques Roadshow. Helen says the crystal doesn’t look like much but when cut and polished it would be the ‘‘sort of gem seen in Scottish jewellery popular in brooches, worn by dancers on their hats’’. ‘‘It was like a gold rush back in the

1850’s everyone was hunting for the crystals. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were very interested in the crystals which were near Balmoral in the highlands. ‘‘My ancestor found the crystal ­ the second biggest ever found ­ in a pothole in a river and transported it on horseback over the mountains to give it to the Queen,’’ she says. Helen says they were invited to Balmoral to attend the Sunday Church service at Craithie Kirk with her Majesty the Queen and members of the Royal Family including the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay ­ Charles and Camilla’s title in Scotland ­ The Duke of York, Prince Andrew, the Duke and Countess of Wessex, Prince Edward and Sophie and their two children were all at the church service. ‘‘We didn’t get to talk with any of them as they are on their summer holidays,’’ Helen said. Helen’s great, great grandfather had 12 children. ‘‘I am descended from his sixth child Christina, the mother of my grandmother. ‘‘The home she was born in Ryvoan Bothy ­ the remains which are now used by the RSPB, a nature conservation authority, as a hut for walkers in the Cairngorms,’’ says Helen who visited the bothy, a basic shelter ‘‘My grandmother emigrated to New Zealand in 1913 and married a Scotsman out here. ‘‘I have always been very aware of my Scottish heritage as well as my father’s English heritage ­ his relations came out on one of the first four ships, The Cressy,’’ says Helen.

‘View & Do’ classes If you are looking for an opportunity to explore your creative side, then Arts in Oxford could be the destination for you. For the first time in its five years of operation, Arts in Oxford will be holding an exhibition of work by artists who will also tutor a workshop in the workshop space located behind the gallery. Titled ‘‘View & Do’’, the exhibition will involve five artists who work in a diverse range of mediums. Renate Galetzka, a Christchurch based ceramic artist, will display her unique ceramic garden spear sculptures, and run a workshop to enable students to create their own. Watercolour artist Ivan Button and painter Zoe Wiseman, Rangiora­ based artists, will both run two day weekend workshops. Ivan is a very popular tutor who has run several successful workshops at the gallery in the past. Zoe’s ‘‘abstracting a natural form’’ workshop will help students work through from exploratory drawings to a final mixed media abstract work. Oxford artist Celia Wilson will show how local, natural pigments (sourced from rocks, clays and plants) can be made into artists paint. Bookbinder Tessa Warburton, who is also resident in Oxford, will be

teaching how to make a beautifully crafted box. Gallery manager Rachel McRobb says one of the most common questions asked about workshops is ‘‘do I need experience?’’ and the answer is most definitely ‘‘No!’’ ‘‘All of the workshops at Arts in Oxford are geared towards novices, as well as those with more experience.’’ Meanwhile, every Saturday afternoon in term three the workshop has been buzzing with tutor and qualified teacher Zoe Wiseman running regular Saturday art classes for children. ‘‘These are fun classes where children are encouraged to experiment with a wide range of art materials, explore their own imagination and develop their individual creativity. ‘‘They have been such a success that they will be continuing in term four. ‘‘Thanks to generous funding from Creative Communities Waimakariri all the workshops are great value for money.’’ Details of all the workshops, as well as times and cost can be found on the gallery website www.artsinoxford.com, on the workshops page, or by phoning the gallery on (03) 3121639.

Greasy and Easy star of show Amberley’s Tin Shed was packed, the stage set for the Leithfield School’s community of parents Stars for the Night show last Saturday night. The school’s largest fundraisers saw a high standard of performance and stiff competition with the hours of practice behind the scenes paying off for the staff and parents paying dividends. Greasy and Easy were the winners on the night presenting a slick production performed by a group of nine parents and supporters of the school. The Board of Trustees team ­ dressed in 1960s swim togs took out second place for their beautifully choreographed item while third went to four blokes who only practiced once and gave the audience a brilliant performance. Stars for the Night would not have happened without school parent Ange Wyllie, who led the charge and had a core group of people supporting her mission to successfully host the 13th annual fundraiser. The fundraising committee approached local and businesses

Cafe ´ and grill opens The Tea Kiosk Cafe ´ and Grill at the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa has been totally transformed and will open its doors next week. Building has finished and staff have been testing the kitchen this week to ensure everything is running smoothly. The shutters were closed for the last time at the Gardenhouse Cafe ´ in July to allow for an upgrade which highlights the building’s heritage features. The cafe was housed in one of only three remaining government tea kiosks in New Zealand, all of which are heritage buildings that were built in 1904 at thermal pool destinations ­ Hanmer Springs, Te Aroha and Rotorua. The original shape of the building has been emphasised and the aluminium windows and doors are being replaced with windows and doors in keeping with the age of the building. The interior of the cafe has been remodelled so that it is more open plan, has a better kitchen and a new pizza oven. The remodelled cafe will pay homage to the building’s past with historic photos and memorabilia. The project is being carried out by O’Brien Building.

North Island drivers have thrown down a gauntlet to the locals for this year’s Ashley Forest Rallysprint. Regular national rally championship competitors Sloan Cox from Rotorua and David Thexton, Auckland, Nick Speedy also from Auckland and Brad Stewart and Don McLean, both from Dannevirke, are all heading south. Cox will certainly fancy his chances with a Mitsubishi Evo 8 hillclimb special. Thexton and Speedy will drive modified Subaru Imprezas and Stewart and McLean Subaru Imprezas. Those likely to challenge the northern invasion include defending champion Matt Summerfield and Kaiapoi’s Richard Baddock. Both will also be driving Subaru Imprezas. Last year Summerfield’s victory was achieved at the wheel of a proven event winner in the form of Steve Murphy’s hybrid Mitsubishi Cordia V8. This car won in 2004, 2008 and 2009 when Murphy drove and 2011 when world rally championship contender Hayden Paddon was at the wheel. This year’s field also includes the 1985 winner Trevor Crowe. Crowe was the first South Island driver to win. That year he drove a V8 powered Toyota Starlet. This time out it will be a very modified Subaru Justy. Other regulars include Chris Hey from Mosgiel in a turbo assisted Toyota MR2. Hey will be looking to again win his class for two wheel drive cars. While overall victory will be the ultimate aim of the leading contenders, the desire to go under the 1 minute mark around the 1.7 kilometre mountain track will also be on their minds. Recent history suggests that any body that eclipses this barrier, will be in with a shot of winning the title. The history of this popular event dates back to 1979, when Steve Millen driving a Vauxhall Chevette twin cam, won on a down hill course. In 1980 the rallysprint used the present course for the first time, which has a climb to the top and then dramatic views of the sea as they look down to the finish line. The course record of 56.57 has stood since 1999 when the late Kim Austin won in his Mitsubishi Starion V8. Austin also won in 1993 and 1998. The first competitor to break the 1 minute barrier was three times New

Like all cars pre­power steering, it needs a driver with strong arms. It’s also not cheap to run, despite being one of the first cars to have a downdraft fuel carburettor for better fuel consumption. Tucked away in a modern garage along Rangiora’s West Belt is a motoring gem from 1930. Ian and Lyndsay Lamb’s elegant, left­ hand drive Chrysler 77 Royal Coupe began life in the United States. A luxury, top­line, car in its day, with a 4.6­litre, 6­cylinder engine, it would have cost $US2010 to buy new. It was originally owned by J.F. Oates, a wealthy Alabama Chrysler dealership owner, who was also a racing­car driver. He sold the car to Eugene Winkler in 1930 with 3500 miles (5632 kilometres) on the speedometer. Little is known about what happened to the car under its new ownership, except that the last time Eugene registered it was in 1941. It sat idle for more than 60 years after that before changing hands again, in 2004, this time for a long journey to New Zealand. There is speculation that Eugene enlisted for World War II, but was killed and never returned home. The car, was imported to New Zealand by Roger Berry, of Takanini, a friend of the Lambs. The Lambs purchased it from him in 2007 when it had a mere 98,000 miles (157,715 km) on the speedometer. Ian has clocked up another 12,000 miles (19,308km) since then. He’s added a new roof, which is a hard­top covered with fabric, and a radiator, but otherwise the car was in good condition when he bought it. Even the velour upholstery, and exterior paintwork are original. To keep the paintwork looking good Ian cleans it with kerosene and linseed oil. ‘‘That brings it up nice and shiny,’’ he says. He’s also added essentials of the modern age, indicator lights and seatbelts, plus a tow bar, to pull their caravan. Ian, who is a retired engineer, made and fitted the tow bar himself at Towsafe Towbars, his son’s Christchurch business. The original car did not have indicator lights, because hand signals were used back then, and there were no seat belts. However, Ian says hand signals are not understood by many motorists today, and seatbelts are now a safety requirement. The two­door Chrysler 77 Royal Coupe has a top speed of 77 miles an hour (123 kmh). ‘‘That’s why it’s called 77,’’ Ian says. It’s not a wide car, which means that although it is a left­hand drive it’s ‘‘good as gold’’ to drive on New Zealand roads. It doesn’t have a heater, but does have all kinds of other top­of­the­range accessories of its time, including a golf­ club compartment, and rumble seat in the back which, when the boot is

Lake Sumner and its surrounds are a popular place for recreation and visits. Most respect the area which looks like a picture postcard as you drive up Lake Sumner Road. The sides of the road however tell a different story. Local resident Bridie Power had noticed the glinting of bottles on the roadside while driving to work and decided to find out just how much rubbish there was. Walking and driving just a few kilometres down the road, she was dismayed at the amount of glass and plastic bottles along with other waste that had been thrown out of cars. She only collected from one side of the road and said there was still more waste in the tree lines bordering the roadside and paddocks. ‘‘It is disgusting people are treating this beautiful area as a rubbish tip, there is no reason at all to not be taking rubbish home with them.’’

Spring storm warning With the spring storm season approaching North Canterbury electricity lines company, MainPower, is warning people about the danger of trimming any trees near power lines. MainPower engineering manager Peter Hurford says in the past few years the region has experienced significant weather events from September to November. ‘‘Strong winds have the potential to bring down trees and branches which, along with other debris, can be carried long distances and into contact with power lines, resulting in power outages,’’ he says. But he warns it is a specialised job to trim trees that are too close or overhanging power lines. Mr Hurford says MainPower has a team of experienced and qualified utility arborists, trained to work on vegetation near live power lines and MainPower budgeted significant funds

each year to trim and maintain trees around high voltage lines. ‘‘Keeping trees clear of power lines requires specialist skills. ‘‘In addition to safety, there are other considerations that tree owners need to be aware of, including growth limit zones. ‘‘It is really important to use tree clearance contractors who are competent to cut trees safely around overhead power lines,’’ he says. Around a third of MainPower’s fault call outs are caused by trees and branches interfering with power poles and lines, particularly in high winds and snow. The Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003 set rules about who has the responsibility for cutting or trimming trees that encroach power lines and prescribe safe distances from power lines and other electricity network equipment.

Kaikoura’s Seafest is set to celebrate its 21st birthday next month. The festival of fun is fast approaching, as Seafest 2015 promises to be an event of ‘‘oceanic proportions’’, when it is held at the Takahanga Domain on Friday and Saturday, October 2­3. Organiser Michelle Ormsby says 471 people participated in the 9th annual Whale Run, organised by Kaikoura Suburban School on Saturday, with runners coming from Tauranga, Hamilton, Wellington, Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury. ‘‘It was awesome. We had a fantastic day. We had a record number of competitors and a lot of late entries ­ it was absolutely mindblowing. ‘‘We are very thrilled and the atmosphere was fantastic. Everything worked very well. By the time of the presentations at Donegal House, we were able to present the prizes outside.’’ Last year a record 460 entries were received for the event which has grown each year since the first event was held in 2007, when there were around 70 runners. Black canvas for mural By ROBYN BRISTOW A World War One memorial mural will come to life on a black canvas in Markham Street, Amberley next weekend. The bare concrete block wall on the corner of Markham Street and Douglas Road has been transformed in recent days into a Dulux Ebony colour in preparation for internationally recognised street artist Bobby Hung (aka Berst) to bring it to life. ‘‘There will be a combination of painting styles on the mural from myself and Danae (Ripley), who will also be painting parts of the mural, and combined together the black base is the perfect colour to unite our works,’’ he says. Project organiser Aleisha Frazer says it’s planned to recruit three local art students to join in the experience when

the painting begins. Peter Jackson from PJ Painters transformed the bare bricks to ebony on Monday in support of the project, with Dulux paint providing the 60 litres of paint needed for the mural. ‘‘It is good timing to paint it black leading up to the Rugby World Cup and ultimately on Friday September 25 a mural will be spray painted over the top,’’ says Aleisha. The project has support from North Canterbury Hire, Canterbury Traffic Control Ltd, and the Amberley Lions Club. Aleisha says everyone is welcome to come along and see the mural come to life. ‘‘Bobby estimates it will only take him two days, so if the weather is kind to us it will be all done over the weekend of September 25 to 27.

Playing ‘evil’ character is fun By DAVID HILL Playing an ‘‘evil’’ character is ‘‘very exciting’’. Celine Goulding is playing Elpheba, the wicked witch of the west, in the Dale Hartley School of Speech and Drama’s (DHSSD) production of ‘‘The Wizard of Oz‘‘, during September 30 to October 3. ‘‘It’s certainly scary how much I enjoy being mean to people on stage. I don’t consider myself naturally an evil person, but I’m not playing myself.’’ Celine, a year 12 student at Middleton Grange School in Christchurch, has played a ‘‘semi­evil’’ character before, Ash a gypsy robber in last year’s DHSSD production of ‘‘The Snow Queen’’. ‘‘She was bad at the start, and then became friends with the hero, but she wasn’t the main villain. It’s very exciting to play the main villain this time.’’ Celine says she is enjoying preparing for a whole school production, instead of the usual senior and junior productions, featuring children ranging in age from 5 to 18 years. ‘‘They did a whole school production of ‘Peter Pan’ for the 10th anniversary and it was so cool, but that was before I joined the school, so I’ve always wanted to be in a whole school production. ‘‘When Dale (Hartley­Brown) said we were doing it this year, I was so excited. It’s very exciting to see the little ones getting good roles with kids so much older than them. They are rising to the occasion and doing a fantastic job.’’ She says ‘‘The Wizard of Ox’’ is ‘‘one of those classic shows that everyone is familiar with and knows the

The ultimate goal would be on the stage, otherwise in film or media. ‘‘Acting would be really cool, but if that’s not to be, maybe a director or broadcasting.’’ The DHSSD’s adaption of ‘‘The

Earthworks . . . After extensive earthworks, Murray Tilson’s site is ready for the workshop PHOTO: AMANDA BOWES to be built.

Building site challenges When Murray Tilson decided to build a new engineering workshop on his rural property near Hawarden, he had several factors to consider before work could begin. Before any site development started, a Land Use Resource Consent from the Hurunui District Council was the first step. Once that had been approved, Murray called in the services of Dwyer Lewis Earthworks to visit the property and evaluate the chosen site. Because the site area had two road frontages it was decided the gravel road off the main road was the best place for site and public access. Site holes were dug to find the clay pan and then a deeper bore hole to assess the soil profile and suitability for building. Earthworks began once the site for the building had been measured out and the fall of land established. The first 300mm of topsoil was taken off until the clay pan was reached which was

used as the primary base. As there was a large pile of earth from the excavation, an earth bund was created to help with noise control from the workshop. The base had hardfill put in ­ AB40 river run type of light rock/gravel and then 20mm of sand over that. The concrete will be the last to be poured. Drainage of water runoff was addressed by creating swales that would take excess water away from the building site, slowing down runoff and dispersing it. Murray says they booked the earthwork contractors in advance and when they arrived everything was done to a high standard and efficiently. Once the site was ready for the building to begin, all that was needed was the building consent, which arrived last week. The standard colour steel shed will enable Murray to do some of his engineering from home. His goal is to gradually do more of his work on site lessening the need to travel.

Brilliant young pianist Jason Brae returns to the Chamber Gallery, in the Rangiora Library on Monday, September 21, with a programme featuring music by Chopin and Liszt. In 2013 Jason received his Bachelor of Music in piano performance with First Class Honours from the University of Auckland under the tutelage of Rae de Lisle. He has also studied at the Aspen Music Festival and School with Ann Schein and John O’Conor. He completed his Master of Arts in piano performance at the Royal Academy of Music in London this year, studying with Christopher Elton and Joanna MacGregor. A prizewinner in international competitions, he has played in New York and Australia and in 2012 was the first New Zealander to become ‘‘Young Steinway Artist’’. River protection work is under way in the Lewis Pass to prevent the Waiau River undermining SH7. Amberley based John Shepherd Contracting Ltd is carting huge rocks to the site, about 10km past the Hanmer Springs turnoff, to build 3 groynes and build up the banks to protect the highway. The company has been contracted to do the work for Downers Ltd,which has the maintenance contract for SH7. John says the rocks, some of which are half the size of a mini, are being extracted from the Montrose Quarry on Mouse Point Road, heading towards Hanmer. The rock from the quarry is a beautiful terracotta and grey colour. This rock is used for home cladding, rock walls, internal features and of course landscaping.

Stock welfare managed Changes to wine competition The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has complimented farmers on how they have managed animal welfare through the prolonged North Canterbury drought. Canterbury­based MPI animal welfare manager Peter Hyde says there have been very few animal welfare issues to deal with in North Canterbury. ‘‘Sheep are a bit lighter than ideal, but not to the extent where they are below the minimum standard that breaches of the Animal Welfare Act.’’ Mr Hyde says farmers have adopted different management strategies to maintain the condition of their animals. ‘‘Many farmers have been feeding out since January. Some farmers have found grazing outside the drought affected areas. ‘‘Most farmers would have reduced their stock numbers, which has included selling off capital stock. No matter which strategy has been used, it has resulted in a significant loss of income to many North Canterbury farmers.’’ He says he was impressed with the support that had been provided by many organisations. ‘‘North Canterbury veterinarians and Beef and Lamb New Zealand have run very well attended field days to assist farmers with their tactics to manage through the drought. ‘‘Federated Farmers has organised the supply of donated feed. ‘‘The Rural Support Trust has visited 530 farms to check how farming families are coping with the difficult situation. Many people have also been involved with organising social events.’’ In June, these groups came together to

Entries are open for the competition which is now in its 13th year. The competition annually attracted around 400 entries across a variety of classes. Judges chairman Terry Copeland says the competition is open to all wines made in an aromatic style and the decision is made to accept red and rose wines to better reflect consumer demand. ‘‘By extending the competition classes, we’re able to recognise that more and more consumers want aromatic styles and this has extended itself into the red and rose spectrum. ‘‘Winemakers are now making styles that are less encumbered with oak and Animal welfare . . . Young farmer entries open Farm field day Young farmers from around the country will be sharpening their agricultural skills over the coming weeks as the 2016 ANZ Young Farmer Contest gets under way next month. District finals run from October to December and are the entry level for the annual Young Farmer Contest. Entry is open and free to all paid members of New Zealand Young Farmers between the ages of 15 to 31 (entrants must be under 31 years of age on January 1, 2016). The top eight district final competitors from each region will go through to their regional final, with the top performer at the regional level earning a spot at the grand final where they will vie for the coveted title of Young Farmer Contest Champion. Last year Hurunui YFC member James Hoban won the North Canterbury district final, before going on to win the Tasman regional final, becoming the first North Canterbury resident to appear in the grand final since 1993. He finished fourth in the grand final held at Taupo. This year’s North Canterbury district final will be held at Culverden, with the date to be confirmed. Check out the contest website

The next Beef and Lamb New Zealand (BLNZ) farming for profit field day to be held in North Canterbury will be held at Henry Pinckney’s farm at Waiau. To be held on October 15, the field day is one of several organised by BLNZ which focus on issues identified as being critical in a given region. From these issues, a programme of activities is developed to help farmers and the local community. The activity may not always involve an on­farm project, but will always be linked to a section of the sheep and beef sector’s value chain. Oxford farmer Cameron Henderson is hosting the field day on Thursday, October 1, and he hopes farmers will learn some ‘‘low cost options to get through the spring’’. ‘‘We’ve had really cold growing conditions this year, perhaps 2­3 degrees cooler than normal and people can’t really buy in extra feed as we don’t have the cash flow we would normally have at this time of year. ‘‘If we’re not able to grow it ourselves, it’s a bit of a struggle to find the feed we need.’’ He encourages farmers to take time out of their busy milking schedules. ‘‘Everyone seems to be pretty busy running with less staff this year, so this is probably the first opportunity in a couple months for people to come together for a barbecue and this year it’s more important than most to get off farm and share ideas. ‘‘The season seems to going alright apart from the cold weather, the cows are healthy and calving is nearly over, so hopefully we can start taking a few weekends off soon.’’ The field day begins with a cuppa at

Sunny skies for tennis Sunny skies saw a huge turnout at the Amberley Tennis Club’s open day last Sunday. There were about 25 juniors on the courts supervised by a few great parents making sure that everyone was involved and safe. Their efforts were rewarded with a sausage sizzle. There were a similar number of adults who came to play, with some first timers seeing what the club had to offer. Some were interested in playing competitively, but many were interested in the Wednesday night social tennis which consists of teams of three playing a round­robin competition with a

handicapped method of scoring. Many have the next few Sundays marked down in their diary to be at Amberley Tennis club with a Sunday barbecue being run for the rest of September. People are asked to bring a small plate of food next week and come along and enjoy another day of tennis. They are also asked to put their name down for either the social or competitive options for the season. Because of the large numbers of juniors wanting to play they are invited to turn up at 12 noon or sooner if supervised by a parent or guardian. Adults will start their games off at 1pm.

Setback for pacer By SHELLEY TOPP An impressive win at the Rangiora Harness Racing Club’s trials on Wednesday last week by Saveapatrol, was exciting news for his owner Grant Hatton. But a short time later the news could not have been worse. His racing future is now uncertain, after badly injuring a tendon. Trainer, Mark Jones said on his website www.markjonesracing.co.nz last Sunday that it was the worst kind of phone call any trainer could have to make to an owner. The tendon will be scanned this week. ‘‘At this stage, our only option looks like doing an operation and giving him a decent break, so he’ll be out for at least six months,’’ he said. ‘‘The vet didn’t give

us much hope of racing him again, but I am confident (that) with the right rehab and all the work Regan (foreman Regan Todd) puts into looking after him that we will get him back racing. I have no doubts he was a serious winning chance in the New Zealand Cup.’’ The brilliant, striking­looking son of Christian Cullen and Rondel Franco has only raced 18 times for 11 wins, one second and one third for $145,618 in stakemoney. He hadn’t raced since July 3 this year when he won the $18,500 Thames Cup at Alexandra Park in Auckland. The Woodend Beach­trained pacer was due to race in the $25,000 Hannon Memorial at Oamaru last Sunday, and was nominated for the $700,000 New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington Raceway on Tuesday, November 10.

Bowls club opening The greens were too soft for a roll up at the opening of the season at the Woodend Bowling Club, but a large attendance still enjoyed opening day last Saturday week. It is hoped bowling can get under way this Saturday. President Mike Carpenter welcomed Waimakariri Mayor David Ayers and Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey to the club along with patroness Jane Moody. Mr

Carpenter thanked members who had worked hard over the winter to prepare the green and the grounds. A defibrillator machine, purchased with the proceeds of a Bookarama run by club members, was on show. Noelene Johnstone and Henry Eder delivered the first jack and blow, but as the greens were too soft to continue members retired inside for afternoon tea.

THE ROTARY BOOK FAIR

Environment Canterbury will be undertaking bank stabilisation work along the Kowai River boundary at the Amberley Domain, on behalf of the Hurunui District Council, between 21 and 30 September 2015. Work will be undertaken between 7.00am and 6.00pm daily.

Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd October Rangiora Borough School Hall

Public access will be restricted to parts of the domain designated as a work site for Health and Safety purposes over this period as heavy plant work and tree felling will be undertaken. Areas affected are: • Amberley Domain; Kowai River frontage between a point approximately 200 metres upstream of the domain down to the Lawcocks Road bridge including the adjacent carpark at times.

Our club supports many groups and individuals in the Rangiora district each year.

• Kowai River; south from Lawcocks Road Bridge to a point approximately 600 metres down stream.

AIMS Games trip a success Oxford Area School students had an experience to remember at the AIMS Games at Mount Maunganui last week. The school sent up a boys’ football and a girls’ netball to compete in the annual event for the first time. Netballer Shani Clist says she enjoyed the games, but found the competition tough. ‘‘I really enjoyed AIMS Games because there were challenging netball games that were very fun to play, even though it was frustrating that the teams were so great at netball. ‘‘But the other good thing about the

netball was that everybody was very kind and friendly to us.’’ Shani says the activities other than the daily sports were ‘‘awesome’’ and included a disco, going to see a movie and going in the hot pools. ‘‘My favourite was the disco because I got to meet lots of new people from all around New Zealand and it was cool to learn about how different it is up north. ‘‘I would definitely recommend going to AIMS Games because it’s a great opportunity to travel to a new place, meet new people your age and to compete in blood­pumping games.’’
